Frequently Asked Questions
California Adopt-a-Pet Day is a statewide adoption event where participating shelters across California waive adoption fees for one day to help pets find loving homes. (Equine adoption fees are covered up to $500.)
Adopting a shelter animal is a truly rewarding experience—not just for the animal, but for you too! Shelters are full of pets of all kinds, breeds, sizes, ages, and personalities, making it possible to find a companion who truly fits your lifestyle. Also, unlike buying from a breeder, shelter pets are usually spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped—potentially saving you thousands of dollars on medical expenses. Best of all, there’s no long wait and you can take your new pet home the same day. It’s a faster, more affordable, and rewarding way to find your perfect companion!
Mark your calendar! This one-day event will take place on June 7, 2025.

Shelters will have a variety of pets looking for homes, including dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, equines, and more! Every pet has its own unique personality, and shelter staff will help you find the perfect match.
Most shelters will welcome walk-ins to make adoptions as easy as possible. The goal of California Adopt-a-Pet Day is to open shelter doors, build excitement about adoption, and find loving homes for as many pets as possible. Some shelters may offer appointments for a more personalized experience or to meet specific pets, so we recommend checking with your local shelter in advance. No matter how you visit our shelters, we’re excited to help you find your new best friend!
No! Adoption fees are waived on California Adopt-a-Pet Day, thanks to ASPCA grants covering costs for most participating organizations. Equine adoption fees are covered up to $500.
Yes! Shelters will share as much information as possible to help you find the best match. All pets will be spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped before adoption. Some pets will have detailed histories, though others may have more limited backgrounds. Shelter staff and volunteers spend time with each pet and can offer valuable insights about their temperament, behavior, and needs. We encourage you to ask questions and interact with the animals to find the perfect fit for your home and lifestyle!
Yes! All adoptable pets will be spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped before going to their new homes. Shelters are committed to reducing pet overpopulation and ensuring the long-term health and well-being of animals, which is why spaying and neutering is a crucial part of the adoption process.
Requirements may vary by shelter, but you should bring a government-issued photo ID and proof of address (such as a recent utility bill or piece of mail). If you have questions about specific adoption policies, check with your local shelter in advance.
