California Adopt-A-Pet Day aims to unite local shelters across California in finding homes for animals in our communities. In 2024, the event saw over 3,609 animals adopted to new homes. This special statewide event provides an opportunity for members of the public to visit local shelters they might otherwise not visit when looking for a companion animal.

While animals are available from other sources, adopting from animal shelters in your community provides loving homes to animals in need and supports the valuable work of these organizations.
California Adopt-A-Pet Day FAQs
California Adopt-a-Pet Day is a special statewide event where participating animal shelters across the state are offering pet adoptions with fees* waived for one day. *Equine Adoption fees covered up to $500.
The event will take place on June 7th, 2025.

Participating shelters will have a wide range of animals available for adoption, including cats, dogs, equines, and small animals like rabbits and guinea pigs.
Adoption requirements may vary by shelter, but all animals will be spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped.
No. Adoption fees are waived with most covered by the ASPCA in partnership with CalAnimals. (Equine adoption fees covered up to $500)
While many shelters have an assortment of mixed breeds, there are a surprising number of purebreds available for adoption.
